オスカルさんが国際青年ファション実業家大賞を受賞(Oscar Lawalata)

インドネシアの若手デザイナーのオスカル・ラワラタさん(Oscar Lawalata・31歳)から嬉しい知らせが入った。2月、英国ロンドンで開催された、British Council（英国文化振興会）主催のIYFE(International Young Fashion Entrepreneur：国際青年ファション実業家) 2009年授賞式で、見事、最優秀賞に輝いた。オスカルさんは、2008年、ブリティシュ・カウンシル主催の国内選考で、インドネシア代表に選ばれ、2月21日にロンドンで行われた最終選考者9名に入った。他のデザイナーは、ベトナム、スリランカ、ポーランド、サウジアラビア、インド、ブラジル、タイ、チュニジア代表。

オスカルさんがトップ賞を獲得した最大の理由は、自国産のテキスタイル文化を用いて、それを国際ファッション市場へ結び付けたこと。多くのデザイナーが、ハイテク・テキスタイル素材に注目し、さらに欧米モードに傾注しがちな中、オスカルさんは、あくまでもインドネシアの伝統テキスタイル文化にこだわってきた。
インドネシアは、まさに“テキスタイル王国”。西端のアチェの金銀刺繍文化に始まり、東部インドネシアのイカット（絣）に至るまで、その昔からヌサンタラ群島の各地に多種多様な繊維文化が息づいてきた。オスカルさんは、インドネシア文化宮(GBI)と共に、NTT（東ヌサトゥンガラ）州のアロール(Alor)県で、地元産のイカットを用いたファッションショーを実施したり、バンカ・ブリトゥン(Bangka Blitung)州でチュアル(Cual)布コンテストに参加、さらにスマトラ島最南端のランプン(Lampung)州でタピス(Tapis)布の収集を行うなど、インドネシア各地で、伝統テキスタイル文化に触れ、それらのカイン（布）をオスカル・ブランドに取り入れる努力を続けている。

『信じられない栄誉です。だって、他の最終選考に残った仲間も素晴らしい仕事をしているし。今回の受賞は、優れたテキスタイル文化を全国各地に持っているインドネシアに与えられたものだと思います。手仕事で世界に誇る布文化を守ってきたインドネシア各地の伝統文化が受賞したんです』---オスカルさんは、その豊かなヌサンタラの伝統テキスタイル文化こそ、栄誉の背景にあると、それらの布を創ってきた人々への賞賛を忘れない。

インドネシア文化宮では、いつの日か、オスカル・コレクションの展示会を実現したいと思っていますが、国内外でますます注目を浴びるデザイナーに跳躍していく今、さて、そんな時間的余裕があるのか、嬉しい心配です。

INDONESIAN BASED CREATIVE WINS INTERNATIONAL AWARD

London, 21 February 2009 Hilary Alexander, Fashion Director at the Daily Telegraph, presented the British Council’s International Young Fashion Entrepreneur 2009 (IYFE) award to Oscar Lawalata, Owner and Managing Director of PT Oscaroscar, Indonesia.

Oscar was presented with the financial prize, which is to be spent on a collaborative project between his own country and the UK, at London Fashion Week. Priya Kishore, Founder and Creative Director of Bombay Electric, India and Linda Speldewinde, Founder and Managing Director of Academy of Design, Sri Lanka, were given special commendations.

Oscar Lawalata has two boutiques and three labels: Oscar Lawalata Culture, Oscar Lawalata Couture and Oscar Lawalata for Uniforms and has won several awards and recognition across Asia.

The judges’ citation for Oscar reads:

“Oscar’s entrepreneurial approach uses product development and promotion to take traditional textiles onto the international fashion market, employing many in the process. His striking level of aesthetic and impressive understanding of local context and the inherent value of heritage is an approach which is to be commended. The judges believe that his approach is a model of best practice, which presents opportunity for the fashion sector in many emerging economies.”

The winner was selected following presentations to a UK-based industry jury. The judges for this year’s award were Carla Fernandez, Founder, Taller Flora and Winner of IYFE 2008 award; Wendy Malem MBA FCSD, Director, Centre for Fashion Enterprise; Alison Moloney, Acting Head, Design and Architecture Department, British Council; Lauretta Roberts, Editor, Drapers.

Celebrating its second year, the IYFE award programme has seen nine entrepreneurs from Brazil, India, Indonesia, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tunisia and Vietnam come to the UK. During this time they have immersed themselves in the UK fashion sector and have been introduced to entrepreneurs and exemplary initiatives in London and Nottingham.

The British Council’s Creative Economy Expert, Andrew Senior, said: “Entrepreneurship, alongside talent is essential if a strong and sustainable fashion industry is to be developed in an emerging economy. Most emerging economies lack the infrastructure that we take for granted in the UK. Recognising the achievements of fashion entrepreneurs and bringing them together in this way helps to consolidate the UK’s position as an international hub for the fashion sector and wider creative economy.”

The winner of the inaugural sibling award, UK Young Fashion Entrepreneur (UKYFE) was also announced at the joint awards ceremony. The winner is Simeon Hartwig, Owner and Designer at Bantum Clothing, a label that has established itself throughout boutique stockists in the UK.
